Feedback

Personally I believe the show went well, to say it was the second show of the team’s for the Headspace series of programming. I believe the show was successful due to the live show team being able to interact with each other very easily, and everyone listened to my instructions I was giving them. The presenters worked excellently together and bounced well in my personal opinion. Philippa was excellent both on the run up and for the live show, with all preparation, listened to all feedback and instructions I gave her and also was very enthusiastic towards the show. Mark was also excellent however had less of an input than Philippa, but still took everything I said onboard and reacted quickly and efficiently to everything I said to make sure we created a high quality programme. Matt was a good BA, however I felt he lacked experience and confident, but, was very good at accepting tasks that I gave him and listened to instructions very well. The rest of the team had great input to the show, and everyone was very good at fulfilling their individual tasks and listening to instructions, and also wanting to help create an excellent show overall.
After reading the tutor feedback (noted below) I agree with a lot of the points mentioned by Dylan. Personally I feel that the correction of the Navanby issue was important, which is why I instructed Mark to correct it after the Barber package (as to keep the listener(s) pleased that may have been annoyed by it.

I feel that the team could have benefited from additional full show practices, as we didn’t complete many which could have ruled out more of the small problems that emerged for the live show. This could have also lifted the BA, Matt Leggett’s confidence, and possibly made him better at reacting to some of the problems that occurred during the show (see On the Air page). I feel that the musical choices that were reviewed by our tutor were fair, however when planning the show the music all had a purposeful relation to the overall running of the show (getting people in and out of the studio, checks with time to ensure the schedule is stuck to). On this basis personally I don’t believe there was a problem with having two songs in such quick succession.

I was extremely satisfied that the Siren FM Managing Editor, Andrew David came to give our group feedback, where he felt like the show was the most professionally produced show of the year, and was excelled at the content in the show and it’s suitability for all ages and genders. This was very pleasing to know that the managing editor of the station liked the show, as it was a nice feeling to know that the hard work had paid off, and editorial decisions I had made, created an excellent end product.

If I was re-creating the show, I would definitely ensure as producer that the script is of a higher quality (ie. to have links and back anno’s written, and packages edited avoiding repetitions, if introducing in the studio). This would make the overall outcome of the show a higher standard. I would also add additional rehearsal time, with a stand in guest to make sure that the presenters were confident and I could review their practise performance to ensure that unnecessary questions were not asked. I would also consider asking the BA to have more training as he was very under-experienced in the live show, as I had to constantly guide him through (again mentioned in the On Air page). I would also attempt to re-shuffle the show and shorten some points to ensure that the in-studio content with Emma, had more attention (as I felt personally in reflection, that it could have had more attention).

Notes

0 News No included on the recording but it seemed from memory to be fine. The programme started on time with the producer, Ba and presenters in control of events

2 Into Nice bright start with a rundown of what the show is and what it’s going to be about as well as introducing the presenters. Could have mentioned the twitter at this stage
3 Presenter chat – beards This was light and sounded informal. Clearly there was a cue but your presenting style has evolved to make it sound conversational well done
4 Beard vox Nice simple cue to bring it in. Quality answers from your vox subjects and a decent crisp edit all of which is important. Picked up with a back anno. Try not to use phrases like “hit the streets of Lincoln” and “out there” as it puts up a barrier between the audience and you.
5 Barbers

You clearly know the issue with getting the right pronunciation with place names. The listeners get really annoyed by this. The package is nice with the use of location and space with use of stereo. Well done Ba for sorting out the low levels with some boost on the desk. Decent questions. This is spot on the core audience. This is good. Traditional packages are very labour intensive and this more on the spot style is quicker and more sustainable. This is the sort of thing which is far more common on radio now.

Nice sting to end. Don’t say welcome back. The listener hopefully has not been anywhere.

Do you correct the Navanby issue! Mmm I am divided on this. People who picked it up will have appreciated the correction but many listeners will have forgotten or not picked it up in the first place.

Out with informal chat on the topic. This a long session  but had lots of different elements in it

Piece which is specifically chosen to link in with the show theme.

The start and end could have been better managed. The start could have been tighter. Also you could have done the back anno over the fade out.

Good simple branding at the end and a solid throw ahead

This was a bit of an odd start, I would have liked it to a bit more organised at the start with a better formed cue. I think you just god mixed up so don’t get too hung up on it. Well recovered.

One thing I will says you need to get on with the interviews. Too much “thanks and how are you” at the start of the interview. It had me shouting “ask her some proper questions!”

This was an easy going interview with you chatting about the course. Could have done more of this to be honest. She was a good interviewee but that’s not the reason to say it wasn’t your skill which contributed to it. You picked her and you got the best from her… .even a bit of flirting!

You flow out of the interview nicely. Could you have mentioned her name again in a back anno?

Firstly, the levels were low and needed boosting. Also who starts the piece with this needed a proper cue. “ our reporter Steve Airey  spoke to the River Island manager Sarah Smith and asked her….

So you need to take the first question off the interview.

25 Emma 2 way

Don’t overdo the bit on how is she, and a proper cue is needed. If the presenter asks why she is there indicates that you don’t know.

The way this works is that the reporter writes a series of questions and the presenter askes them, this needed have more structure I feel.

26
27 Presenter chat So light branding and chat about the presenters outfit. To me it seems like its loosing direction and purpose a little. There is need in this area for a re-definition. This needs to be a solid piece with an issue.

You come out of the previous section with some branding and reminding the listener what they are listening to …

Easy and informative cue, this could have done with the first question by Harriot removing to go straight into the interviewee.

Decent quality line and this was a really good use of technology to get the interviewee.

Harriot don’t say “listeners”  on air.

Perhaps the levels of the interviewee could have been up even more in the mix

Another nice funny jingle which is used to punctuate and brand

35 music Little to say about this it’s a piece of music.. no need to identify the link between the show and the music too much I think the listener will get the point. 3 piece of music in the second half, 1 in the first!

Philippa  you are a little distant  on the mic, did you turn away?

You committed on of the big crimes of live radio in this cue. You blocked!!!!!!! DON’T DO IT AGAIN.

WE SPOKE TO KAY FLEMMING AT LINCOLN CENTRAL MARKET. “HELLO IM KATE FLEMMING  AND I RUN THE FABRIC STALL…..” NOOOOOOO.

Good interview though with some subtle soundscape and good questions.

I think you could have let the wildtrack run a liitle longer than the interview to let the presenters talk over the end rather than a hard stop.

43 Emma and sewing and chat

Good to have the sound of the machine in the background to illustrate this.

This was a bit like a sewing bee where people make something and chat while doing it.

49 Music It relates to the show fine. I think these last 2 tracks could have been better space in the show though. 2 significant tracks in the last 15 minutes. It’s something you did as strategy to hit the news. Perhaps the producer could have done this shuffling before the ½ hour mark but it’s easy for me to say after the event. It was a decision you took at the time and it was the right one. Where you need to improve is being able to predict these issues an 40 minutes in advance and that’s only something you will get with experience in the studio.

One again nice to have the sounds of the market which placed me in the location.

Informative interview.
